Das Holz \u00e4lterer B\u00e4ume weist h\u00e4ufig einen dekorativen rotbraunen Farbkern (Rotkern) auf. Der Splint ist grau-rosa bis gelblich und nimmt den gesamten Stammquerschnitt ein. Im Alter (ab ca. 80 Jahren) kommt es meist zur Ausbildung eines fakultativen Rotkerns.
